Cardigan Welsh Corgis

Our love for this breed began with the  purchase of our first Cardigan Welsh Corgi, CLF's Orion, aka. "Ry".  He was shown to his Championship quickly and is our devoted family pet.  He has also shown wonderful aptitude in obedience and is  now waiting for his mom (me!) to work him in tracking, herding and agility or all three!  We firmly believe that Ry is a wonderful ambassador for the breed.  While we are busy with a small breeding program and showing some of the younger cardigans in the breed ring, Ry is being handled by a friend's 10 year old son in Junior Showmanship.  In addition to Ry, who is a brindle color, we also have blue merles and "tri"s.  Everyone has their favorite color, but here at Steppenwolf - temperament and health are our main concerns. We also strive for the "correct" Cardigan structure, intelligence and a willingness to please. Yes, we want it all! We find that the Cardigan is a breed that can deliver it all!

This breed is believed to have been in existence for well over 3,000 years. The name "Corgi" is derived from the Celtic words: "cor" for dwarf and "gi" (hard "g" sound), for dog.  Sometimes it is confused with the other Corgi breed, the Pembroke.  Along with several other differences, the Cardigan has a tail , while the Pembrokes are docked at birth.  The Cardigan  is a long, low, fox-like dog with large upright ears.  He has a bushy tail, moderate bone, with front legs  slightly bowed around a deep chest.  Average size is 12 inches at the shoulder with females weight ranging from 25 to 34 lbs. and males generally 30 to 38 lbs.  Coats come in a variety of colors and patterns.  The Cardigan should give the appearance of a powerful dog, capable of endurance and speed.  Being bred to herd cattle, they also excel in obedience and agility.  They are considered fun-loving and devoted family dogs.  Temperament is somewhat like a well bred German Shepherd.
